Holiday Sip: Mulled Wine

Mmm, mulled wine!  It doesn’t get more festive than this traditional holiday cocktail.  Just add a fire (and slip on those cozy lounge pants!).  For our Friendsgiving a few weeks back, my girlfriend Stephanie whipped up a delicious (or so I heard) batch of mulled wine, and I’m dreaming of making another batch again soon so I can partake this time around.  The aroma of the cinnamon and citrus fruits simmering away along with our roasted veggies made the entire house smell like Christmas morning.  I love how certain scents and flavors just instantly put you in the spirit.  What are some of your favorite holiday sips and scents?  Recipe below!

Mulled Wine |

1 bottle of red wine

1/4 cup brandy

1/4 cup water

1/4 cup honey

1 cinnamon stick

6 cloves

2 star anise

1 lemon

1 orange

Juice the lemon and orange.  Add everything into a saucepan (or crockpot works too!).  Bring to a boil over medium heat then reduce to low and let simmer for 15 minutes.

Serve with warm orange slices

** taste as you go along–Stephanie added more honey and citrus than the recipe calls for and we also let it simmer together for over an hour before serving
