Future Home Inspiration

27 July

Today marks a very exciting day for my guy and I–we’re picking up the keys to our first house! It’s still crazy to me that this fall marks two years for us now in Sacramento and that just a couple years back in New York the thought of a house made me feel claustrophobic. Oh how much can change, and oh how excited I am to be finished with apartment living and to have a backyard (bbqs! a dog!).

Between the house hunting, the purchasing (ah!), and having the current owners rent back from us for a couple months, it’s been quite the process already and we feel like we’ve entered into a whole new right of passage of adulthood as homeowners. It took us some time to narrow down the neighborhood we wanted but once we did, and got into the mindset that renovations can be fun (that’s actually all me saying that not so much my guy, ha), we fell quickly for our 1930’s colonial-style charmer. It has so much history, character, is located on one of our favorite streets, and couldn’t be more ideal for us and our lifestyle.

I’ve been saving decor inspiration for a while now and will of course be sharing more in the coming months as the renovations take place, but here are some of the elements I’m excited to incorporate in the main great room, kitchen and dining space.

I’m drawn to quite an eclectic mix of decor styles so narrowing things down has been the hardest part for me. While I’ve loved our current industrial loft vibe (which you can also see and read about here)–I’m looking forward to decorating with more of a bohemian California flair while staying true to the style and character of the house.

Open shelving, brass accents, a breakfast nook, airy and an overall inviting and comfortable space are most important to us.

Planning to have some fun in the powder room with Moraccan style accents and decor! Maybe some fun tiles too.

And possibly the most fun room of all–my future office inspiration.

This is so exciting — congrats on being home owners!! I’m sure it feels so good to have a black slate to build/ design the home of your dreams! I love all your inspiration, I can’t wait to see what you create!

  • Congrats! Renovating can be fun although sometimes when you are right in the middle of it you wonder why you signed up for it in the first place! Loving all the inspiration.

@torontoshopoholic:disqus haha I’m sure that will happen to us–definitely my husband. Would love any advice! xx 😉

      • We renovated a 100 year old home with a 2 year old in tow so it is very do able! I would suggest to do 1 thing/room at a time unless you can move out while things are getting done. We tried to do a bunch of the renos ourselves but go in over our heads when it came to the kitchen – hiring help was the best thing we did. It will be so great when you create something you love 🙂

@torontoshopoholic:disqus we’re going to start with the kitchen / downstairs while staying in our current apt… and hopefully it will be finished before our lease is up (fingers crossed!). 100 years–wow–I’m sure your house has so much character!! Thanks for the much needed vote of confidence and advice! xx

Waking up at 3am with our 72 pound dog trying to squeeze in between us on a queen, I started to browse Instagram which led me to the blog. I’m so happy it did because it makes me feel so much better that this is a normal feeling when buying a house. We close on our first home this week and I have been more anxious less excited. I always felt like renting was freedom and loved our small spaces we called home. We did not get the fixer upper like I wanted and something more turn key because the options here are sparse. Thank you for the inspiration and words. Enjoy your first home! I always enjoy your style and look forward to seeing what you do to your new home. Cheers!

Congratulations on the house, Alicia! Being a homeowner is definitely one of the most challenging, yet most rewarding things you can do! We just bought a house in West Sac in May, and while there are a lot of headaches during the renovation and moving process, it’s a remarkable milestone and a different feeling to know that it truly is, “your house.” Hope you will still be in the area and we can grab that drink! xo -Jamie

    • Alicia Lund

@mjm929:disqus aw thank you, thank you Jamie!! And that’s so exciting, congrats to you as well–would love to meet up soon and hear all about it! Let’s set a drink date! (And yes I’m staying in the area!) Xx

  • Yaay!! Congratulations on your new home. I just discovered you via IG and realized you also live in Sac and had to pop over and check out your blog. I love this city and am so glad to see another transplant love it here too. We recently downsized from our big builder basic house in Natomas to a much smaller 1940s cottage bungalow fixer upper beaming with charm in an older neighborhood and we LOVE it. Im so excited to have found you and see your home come together.
