The Morning Routine

Growing up I was always rather cheerful and speedy (getting ready-wise) in the mornings…and then something switched in the past couple of years. I blame New York. No, really I do. That, and my love for caffeine (it’s actually really sad how grumpy I am now until I’m holding that morning cup). I’m slowly training myself to go to bed earlier so I will wake up energized, and there’s something about being back in California that’s definitely working, but boy do I love a luxuriously lazy morning routine. Don’t you? Oh and another aspect that puts a damper on my AM routine? A case of curls gone awry because crazy hair is never the way to start the day.

So when John Frieda asked me to try their Frizz Ease products that boast tamed curls, and that I would never have to pull my hair back no matter what the day might bring (second 45 of their campaign video makes me laugh every time), I thought I’d give them a try. Plus, I can’t always throw on a hat (my savior on those especially frizzy days)… as much as I’d like to.

While testing out whether or not the products lived up to the “frizz free hype” I decided I’d take you through my ideal morning routine. Now my mornings don’t always look like this, especially on the days I’m traveling, but if everything went my way they would–awesome frizz-free hair included (and maybe with a Pilates class thrown into the mix).

6am // Hit snooze.

6:30am // Rise, shine and quickly pack (heading to LA in t-minus a couple of hours).

7am // Jump in the shower and test out John Frieda’s Frizz Ease Smooth Start Shampoo & Dream Curls Conditioner.  Ooh dream curls?! Hope so.

7:10am // Spritz on John Frieda’s Dream Curls Daily Styling Spray and decide to let my hair air dry while I check a few emails.

7:45am // Okay in serious need of caffeine. Time to touch up the locks before I walk out the door. I curl small pieces with my “wand” (aka a cheap curling iron that I broke the clamp off of) and mess it up a bit so the look isn’t “too curled” as I prefer non-fussy, looser waves.

8am // Walk through the neighborhood to Old Soul. Coffee order: black with room for cream.

8:30am // Ah, walking back home… caffeinated. Can you tell how happy I am now? So happy. Maybe I am a morning person?

8:40am // Decide to set / define the curls using John Frieda’s Secret Weapon Touch-Up Creme (my favorite product from the line) as they did get slightly frizzy on my walk home. I used about a quarter size worth of product, pulling it through the curls to create the piece-ier look that I like.

8:45am // Shake time! Lately I’ve been on a berry-almond-milk-smoothie kick which consists of: frozen berries, bananas, almond milk, chia seeds, flax and sometimes I’ll throw in spinach, avocado or kale. Oh and I’ve been sipping them out of my new fancy schmancy mason jar which was a gift from my friend Annie (she makes the cool leather wraps)!

9am // Time to focus. Answer emails, coordinate upcoming meetings and shoots, edit photos, answer a few more client emails and make sure I haven’t forgotten anything packing-wise. Oh yep, almost forgot my camera.

10am // Before leaving for the airport I tamed my frizz with a touch of Frizz Ease Original 6 Effects Serum. Worked like a charm. And you know what, this actually turned out to be a pretty good hair day!
