Rex’s Neutral Nursery Reveal

Excited to finally reveal Rex’s nursery!  I had way to much fun remodeling and decorating his room.  Before finding out we were having a boy I had only pinned inspiration for a girl’s room–but then after taking time to look back over the photos I loved most, I realized the neutral aesthetic, monochrome color palette, and minimal vibe I was going for would totally work for either a boy or girl.  So I just decorated his room as if it was any other room in the house (not super baby), with a mix of family heirlooms, colorful Moroccan rugs, and dark wood accents.  I wanted to keep the room minimal with very little on the walls as I want the room to transition with Rex as he grows and this way he can make it his own.  I think that’s what I’m most looking forward to, seeing his little personality develop and how his room morphs over the years depending on his interests.  But the pieces that I did incorporate all tell a story and have some special meaning which I love!

Rex's neutral nursery reveal!

This rocking chair is an antique–over 100+ years old–from my mom’s side of the family.  My great-grandma rocked my grandpa (Norman Rex–where we got Rex from!) in it.  My Dad had it reupholstered for me and picked out the dark leather seat which fits in with the decor perfectly.  Great choice Dad!  The bookcases I ordered through Design Alchemy (who, like the rest of our house, helped with the remodel).  We had them hung low so they’d be on Rex’s level.  And the antique wooden truck was a find from a local store here in Sacramento that my husband thought was cool.  We bought it just a week or so before Rex was born.

One of the main highlights of his room remodel was the closet that I worked closely with California Closets to redesign.  I have dreams about redoing all of the closets in our house one day but Rex got his dream closet before mama–so generous of me right?!  We removed the single rod (which had seen better days) and shelving that was originally in place and had a system built that functions so much better for us (and a baby’s room).  Now the additional shelving, smaller hanging rod sections, and pull-out bins make keeping his closet organized so much easier plus everything is completely adjustable so we can move things around as Rex’s closet needs change through the toddler years and beyond.  I couldn’t be happier with how it turned out and working with California Closets was such a wonderful and easy process.

I’m so glad California Closets suggested we incorporate the linen pull-out bins as these are so great for throwing his beanies, socks, tees, (etc.) in.  Since Rex doesn’t have a lot of hanging stuff at the moment I needed more space for toys and blankets so I have a couple additional baskets and canvas hampers in the closet to keep things organized.  I’m sure his closet will fill up quickly!  Additional baby / kid closet inspiration.

The changing station was custom-built for the space.  Originally there was a lower desk in the window here–we removed it and replaced the desk with drawers where I keep diapers, wipes, clothes etc.  We don’t always change Rex here at the moment since he’s sleeping in our room but I’m sure this spot will get plenty of use soon.  And the times we have changed Rex here he’s in awe of the window–he loves looking out.

The only prints we have hanging on the walls are photos I fell in love with when at Diani Living (an awesome home decor shop in Santa Barbara) this past summer.  They felt very “my guy” to me… so it’s a little piece of him in Rex’s room.  Buffalo grazing in a field and a wild dirt path.  I had them framed using Framebridge (my framing go-to).

A funny note | I started off ordering Rex a bunch of themed diapers from Honest.com before he was born and that first month or so but then quickly felt he was more of a plain white kinda guy.  There’s something so sweet and organic feeling about the all-white.

I couldn’t love Rex’s mobile more–which is from one of my favorite nursery decor brands: Petit Pehr.  They sell such a sweet mix of playful and cute printed items!  We love their crib sheets, blankets, and hooded towels so much.  More Petit favorites…

I went back and forth between a white or wooden crib and am so glad I went with the darker wood.  I love the minimal design of this one which fits the aesthetic of our home perfectly.  And the rugs are sweet finds from my friend Ali’s Moroccan rug shop here in Sacramento.  He let me play with a few different options before I settled on the two we have in here now.  I love the subtle hints of blue, yellow and pink.  And Rex loves the sparkles on the Moroccan pouf!

I made this feathered mobile at this event just weeks before Rex was born.  I hadn’t necessary made it for the nursery but when I came home realized it totally worked.

This sweet personalized rocker was a gift from my husband’s office crew.  Such a thoughtful gift and I can’t wait until he can actually use it.
