Sunday Brunch Club

Girlfriends are always the best medicine.  Whether you’re having a great week or a blah week–you know who to call.  As the years fly by, quality time with girlfriends has become even more precious to me as it now oftentimes has to be quite coordinated and pre-planned.  Gone are the days of walking down our dorm room hall to watch episodes of Lost and procrastinate on any kind of studies.  Even when a slew of us college besties moved to San Francisco, most nights of the week I found time to walk from my place in North Beach to Tessa and Carlina’s in Nob Hill to drink wine and watch The Bachelor while waiting for our Chinese take-out to arrive.  Now with all of us spread out and our various jobs (and some with mama duties), even getting them on the phone can be a challenge.  Which is why making time for those ladies in your life is so important–and inspired me to want to make Sunday Girls’ Brunch a more regular thing now that I’ve made a handful of awesome girlfriends here in Sacramento.

We lucked out with the weather–it was during that semi-heat wave a few weekends ago which meant we got to eat outside (I can’t wait for more springtime meals outdoors)!  My girlfriend Stephanie made Cannellini Soup with Parmesan, I threw together one of my kale salad creations (a.k.a. a doctored-up packaged situation from Trader Joe’s), made sliced loaves of bread look pretty with twine and a sprig of rosemary, AND, wait for it–I made my first cake!  A homemade carrot cake (my favorite) and it was unanimously a hit.  In fact, it was so good and I impressed myself so much that I attempted it again this past rainy weekend.

Wine is always a good idea–and Benziger Chardonnay was the perfect crisp sip to wash down our meal.

I also pulled out my Aunt’s china for the first time (they were a wedding gift from my Uncle)–now that I have a house and a place to store anything “extra” my mom gave them to me recently.  The fancy stuff should always be put to use!–plus they brought back sweet memories of Aunt Becky cooking away in the kitchen.
