The Things That Moms Will Do

27 August

Before becoming a mom, I didn’t fully understand how deep of a love you instantly feel for your baby.  It’s a crazy, indescribable–you’ll do anything–love.  So much so that I think every mom has their stories (whether funny, emotional or crazy ridiculous!).  The things you said you would never do before becoming a parent that you now do (guilty!).  Or the extremes to which you will go to get your baby what they need.  I am constantly laughing with my girlfriends about the things we’ve done for our kids but these stories are what we bond over and are so fun to share.

When Pampers Pure asked me to share my Pure Goals story earlier this year, of course a number of things popped into my mind but most specifically my struggle to get Rex to drink milk.

My #PureGoals story…

Nutrition has always been extremely important to me.  I take time to plan our family meals in hopes of getting some healthy food into my boy’s bellies.  I wasn’t always into cooking, but in the past couple of years it’s really become a passion of mine.  Understanding where my food is coming from (very spoiled here in Sacramento with all of the amazing locally grown options) and making sure Rex gets the right nutrients is really important to me.  I could never get Rex to take a bottle as a little baby, or drink formula, so when we switched over to whole milk from breast milk at one year it was a challenge to make sure he was getting the right nutrients.  Side note: there’s a whole other breastfeeding story there of feeling tethered to my baby for a year because he wouldn’t drink from a bottle… but I also didn’t want to cut him off too early because I knew how important that breast milk was for his health.  I am still just in awe of the things moms do for their babies!  You really don’t appreciate the sacrifice until you go through months of breastfeeding yourself.  It was special and amazing but also a really hard year for me.

When I stopped breastfeeding I wasn’t too concerned about Rex drinking whole milk because he was such a great eater.  But when I mentioned Rex wasn’t drinking milk at his one year check-up his doctor was instantly concerned.  That feeling, that I hadn’t tried hard enough to get him to drink milk made me feel like I failed as a mom.  So then I went a little crazy (ha!).  I raided and bought every kind of whole milk offered at our local Co-Op.  From pasteurized and unpastrized–nut milks too (which he likes but aren’t as high in protein)… we tried them all.  I finally landed on a local dairy brand I believe in that he will drink (in smoothies) and that’s now how we start our day, every morning.  I’ve even gone as far as to make my own raspberry and strawberry milks for him (just crushed fruit that I sifted the milk through)–which of course he loves.  The smoothies are great though as they’re an additional way I can add greens into his diet (lots of spinach and kale!).

As soon as Rex wakes up it’s a quick diaper change (Pampers Pure of course) and downstairs to get that smoothie going.  I cherish our time together in mornings!  Making his smoothie, my coffee, putting on a pot of oatmeal, listening to what he has to say (always jibberishly adorable)… and slowing into the day.

Rex Approved Green Smoothie Recipe |  1 cup whole milk.  1/2 banana.  1 cup frozen or fresh berries.  1 cup spinach.  yogurt if you want to thicken.  (I just eye ball everything, blend and taste to see if it needs anything.  Some days we also add or sub yogurt for avocado).

I typically save half of his smoothie for his afternoon snack to take with us to the park later in the day.
